NEWPORT County AFC manager Justin Edinburgh praised his players’ resilience and character after they earned a point at relegated Tranmere Rovers last night.

Goalkeeper Joe Day made several superb saves to keep the hosts out as County extended their unbeaten run in League Two to five matches.

And the 0-0 draw at Prenton Park sets up the Exiles for another tough trip to Shrewsbury Town on Saturday.

“We had to soak up a lot of pressure during the game and it was a very good performance by Tranmere but also a very good away performance by ourselves,” said Edinburgh.

“We were solid without being spectacular and we had to do a lot of defending but Joe Day was fantastic.

“He had to pull of some real top class saves and that’s why we bought him here.

“We know his qualities and he kept us in the game.

“That’s what you expect when he’s called upon but it’s an excellent clean sheet and keeps the unbeaten run going.”

Edinburgh admitted that his side failed to create enough chances last night but he was happy to take a point back to Newport.

“We didn’t keep possession of the ball as well as we have but, credit to Tranmere, I didn’t think they allowed us to do that,” he said.

“We came up against a League One team from last year so we knew it was going to be tough and it certainly was that.

“But my players showed great resilience and character and ticked a lot of boxes.”

Striker Aaron O’Connor replaced defender Kevin Feely at the break as the Exiles boss switched formation from 5-3-2 to 4-3-3.

“We thought we had to get an extra body up front,” explained Edinburgh.

“It didn’t work but that wasn’t because of formations it was just we didn’t do enough in possession of the ball.

“We didn’t make right decisions at times and we weren’t brave enough but it’s a tough place to go.

“We have to pick points up on the road after two excellent performances at home and if you can do that then you will climb the league table.”

Edinburgh also revealed that Feely is likely to be out for around a fortnight as he requires treatment on a toe injury that has troubled him since August.

“He’s struggling with his toe so he’s going to have to have the nail removed and he’ll probably miss a couple of games now.

“Bearing that in mind we didn’t take a chance with Ismail Yakubu and Ryan Jackson and we’re hopeful that those two will be back into the fray for Saturday.”
