NEWPORT County AFC teenage star Regan Poole has been selected on the standby list for the Wales under-17 squad ahead of their UEFA qualifiers later this month.

The 16-year-old defender, who has been promoted from the County academy to the first team squad this season, has already been on trial at Manchester United and Fulham.

And he has also attracted the attention of the Wales selectors ahead of the qualifiers against Russia in Minsk on October 19, against Belarus in Molodechno on October 21 and Montenegro in Minsk on October 24.

Poole, who made his Exiles debut in the 0-0 draw at Shrewsbury Town last month and was on the bench for the defeat at Oxford at the weekend, is not currently scheduled to make the trip.

But if there are any injuries in the original squad Poole could get the call-up and would be ruled out of County’s matches against Dagenham & Redbridge, Southend United and Accrington Stanley.

Meanwhile, Poole’s former County under-18 teammates are through to the second round of the FAW Youth Cup after a 2-0 victory at RTB Ebbw Vale on Sunday.

The match at Vale’s Hilltop Sports Ground saw the hosts have three men sent off in a bad-tempered second half.

Goals from Nyall Gray after 27 minutes and Cedirc Mpaldi after 43 minutes put the County youngsters through.
