NEWPORT County’s management and players are vowing to bounce back quickly from their 3-0 defeat at Kenilworth Road.

Despite matching Luton for possession, shots on and off target and bettering their corner count on Saturday, the decisive scoreline shows there is much to do before the Boxing Day visit of Plymouth and the trip to Cheltenham Town on Sunday.

The Christmas period can be crucial in shaping a season – though Newport’s fine form over the festive period last year proved to be a false dawn – and midfielder Yan Klukowski’s believes County have the character to bounce back in what will be a busy week.

The Exiles train today and tomorrow with a light session also pencilled in for Christmas Eve before two games in 48 hours on Friday and Sunday.

“We are very disappointed our run has come to an end (the Exiles had been nine undefeated) but the sign of a good team is making sure you don’t get beaten twice on the trot or three on the trot and we have that opportunity in our next game.

“We have the two games, it’s the best time of year and after you have a defeat like you’ve just had, you want to eradicate the wrong.

“So we’ll be going into the Plymouth game trying to take positives from the Luton game and looking to get back to winning ways as quickly as possible.”

Edinburgh agreed.

“We do want to take the positives, we’ve lost out to a side that were ruthless in front of goal and we weren’t able to match that,” he said.

“But at the same time we don’t want the players to just accept that they have got beaten, we were on a great run and it’s going to hurt that we have lost 3-0.

“We’ve been a strong group this season and we have a good opportunity with the two games this week to get started on another run.”

Klukowski wasn’t at his best at Kenilworth Road after a purple patch of form, having scored three goals in five games heading into the loss to the Hatters. However, after biding his time, he feels he’s beginning to show his credentials after a career spent on the fringes of the Football League.

“I’m starting to get up to the speed and tempo of League Two, I was disappointed with my performance on Saturday but I think a lot of the lads would say that, but for me personally, it’s nice to be playing now, but as a team we need to get back to winning ways. As a team we need to be more clinical in front of goal.”
