MIDFIELDER Yan Klukowski says Justin Edinburgh being linked with other jobs is a sign that Newport County AFC are heading in the right direction, writes Andrew Penman.

County manager Edinburgh has been heavily backed in the betting markets to succeed Peter Taylor at League One Gillingham.

And Klukowski sees the link as a positive for the Exiles who are third in League Two ahead of tomorrow’s match at Cambridge United.

“With the great work he’s doing he’s going to be linked with other jobs and it’s a good sign,” said Klukowski.

“We’d rather that than be involved in a relegation battle or bumbling around mind-table.

“We want to be picking up good results and challenging for promotion.

“I thought we’d be around the play-offs area and we’re maybe a few places higher than I thought we would be at this stage,” he added.

“Things change throughout the season but we’re playing well at the moment so we want to keep that momentum.

“Spirits are very high in the camp. Positive results bring that positive attitude and it’s just a case of keeping that momentum going as long as we possibly can.

“If you lose that momentum it’s difficult to get it back so we need to make sure we maintain it.”

Klukowski is currently out of the side as Lee Minshull, Adam Chapman and Mark Byrne excel in midfield but he’s confident of winning a regular place.

“In midfield we’ve got six players fighting for three places,” said the 28-year-old.

“Mike Flynn has been on the bench recently and he’s got a wealth of experience.

“If the manager wants a more attacking option he can bring me on or if we need to see out a game then he can call on Max Porter.

“At the moment the three in the side are playing very well and they deserve their place but there is still a long way to go this season.

“You’ve just got to make sure you’re ready when your time comes again.

“I’ve done it already this season and I’m confident I can get a run in the team again.”
