NEWPORT County’s Ryan Jackson believes he can do a good job for the side as an orthodox right back, writes Michael Pearlman.

Jackson, along with Cardiff loanee David Tutonda, caught the eye in County’s superb 1-0 win at Burton Albion on Saturday, a first home defeat for boss Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink.

And now part of a flat back four, Jackson believes he’s finding his best form back in the position where he made his name at Macclesfield.

“Playing wing back suits me, probably best, but I still consider myself a right back even though being a wing back has added another string to my bow,” he told the Argus.

“I don’t really mind, there is a little bit of adjustment, knowing it’s about defending first, but once I get my rhythm back, I think I can do well at right back for the team.”

Jackson is hopeful County can kick-off from the fillip of winning at the league leaders.

“It was a good result, the first thing we needed was to produce a performance and not only did we do that, but we kept a clean sheet and scored a great goal as well,” he said.

“All I can do is try and perform to the best of my ability in every game, obviously no-one can do that in every game, but the main thing was to get a platform to perform at Burton and hopefully I was able to do that.

“It was important to pick the times we tried to get forward, because the main thing was to try and keep a good shape and keep a clean sheet.

“It was a good goal to be fair, Miles says when he scores he scores good goals and he showed that to be fair.

“I think we did well to weather the storm, it was a case of us keeping the ball when we could and hitting them on the counter and we executed that.

“I think on our day we can beat anyone, but the consistency level needs to go up from us.

“We need to keep our tempo going at home and try to get a result.”

And Jackson felt the performance showed the players are firmly behind Jimmy Dack, now County’s permanent successor to former boss Justin Edinburgh who left for Gillingham.

“We are all behind Jimmy, he’s a good manager and works hard for the team and the club and it was a nice way for him to celebrate becoming permanent manager.”
