NEWPORT County boss Jimmy Dack is likely to put faith in a little and large combination in an attempt to get County firing against Luton Town.

The Hatters visit Rodney Parade tomorrow (Tuesday) night with the Exiles two points off the League Two play-off spots with a chance to beat one of their direct rivals.

And ahead of a clash with Plymouth on Saturday, it’s not difficult to make the argument that this is the week that will define County’s campaign.

County have only seen Miles Storey score in 2015 out of their collection of strikers, with Storey one of two County players now struggling with a hamstring injury.

He’s likely to miss the visit of the Hatters, as will midfielder Mark Byrne.

Striker Robbie Willmott had a fitness test on a thigh injury on Monday morning, but he too is injured and won’t face his former club.

However, Aaron O’Connor came through Friday’s draw with Cheltenham unscathed and is likely to be partnered in attack by Rene Howe.

“I thought Rene and Aaron looked quite lively on Friday and they really looked a partnership at Wycombe, but we haven’t been able to play them together since,” Dack told the Argus.

“As a duo they complement each other well and it’s my hope that we will see more of that in the next couple of games.”

Dack is ready to ditch his narrow 4-4-2 system.

“We need more men in the final third, I said I wasn’t married to any formation and it is something we’ll probably look to tweak.”

Dack admits the continued absence of Robbie Willmott – who denied rumours at the weekend that he’s off to Gillingham for a reunion with Justin Edinburgh – is a blow, especially ahead of the visit of one of his former clubs.

“Robbie will have wanted to play against Luton, players love going up against their old sides,” he explained.

“We were hopeful he’d be ok, but we gave him the once over on Monday morning and he’s still got a tight thigh.

“If we exacerbate the injury we’ll lose him for the season and we don’t want that, we need him.”

Dack believes the Exiles can cause more attacking troubles to John Still’s side, because they’ll be seeking a win.

“We don’t envisage Luton coming here and sticking everyone behind the ball, they need a win as well, they have almost identical form to us,” he said.

“I think it’ll be a great atmosphere because our supporters were terrific on Friday and hopefully it’ll be a more open game.

“We are working so hard and the supporters appreciate that, but now we need to reward them with a performance and some better play in the final third.”

The Exiles are hopeful Ismail Yakubu will be available this evening after missing Friday’s clash and his availability would perhaps increase the possibility of County rekindling their tried and tested 5-3-2 system.
