NEWPORT County AFC promotion hero Mike Flynn says the investment from departing chairman Les Scadding is the main reason the club is in the Football League.

Euromillions lottery winner Scadding announced this morning that he is stepping down as chairman and director with immediate effect having steered the club from the Conference to League Two in his time at Rodney Parade.

Former player and youth coach Flynn, who played a key part in the 2012/13 promotion-winning season under ex-boss Justin Edinburgh, said: “For me, as a Newport boy with the club so close to my heart, I can’t thank him enough for what he’s done for my home town club.

“If it wasn’t for Les this club wouldn’t be in the Football League and any fan who doesn’t appreciate what he’s done, well, I don’t know what they expect.

“Les has put a fortune in to the club, more than people think.

“He’s cleared the debt, which is paramount, and left the club in a good position.

“He wants to go off and enjoy his life now,” he added. “And the club needs to move on – it can’t keep relying on one man.”
