IT COULD be a case of friends reunited at Gloucester City next season with ex-County stalwarts Tim Harris and Mike Flynn set for a reunion, writes Jordan Trott.

Former Newport County captain Flynn has gone on trial at the Tigers, who are managed by Harris, who represented the Exiles as a player, manager and director of football.

Flynn, who has over 100 appearances for County during three stints at the club, is expected to feature in their Gloucester’s pre-season friendly against Kidderminster Harriers on Tuesday evening.

After being released from his hometown club this past summer, the Newport boy has been searching for a new club. The 34 year-old has over 300 appearances in the Football League, and will be dropping down into the National League North for a reunion with Harris, who was instrumental in bringing Flynn back to Newport.

Flynn will have an opportunity to impress in the five remaining friendlies before the Tigers start their season against FC United Of Manchester on August 8. However, Harris would not be drawn into whether it was a permanent deal.

“He’s a good friend of mine, he played for me when he was 17 or 18 at Newport and he made a very good career for himself,” he said.

“I brought him back to Newport to help us get back in the Football League but he was released at the end of last season.

“He’s a player who should be playing League football or certainly Vanarama National League. He’s going to help us out and we’re going to help him out.

“I don’t want the players we’ve got who are fit getting too much football it is a balancing act as we are already carrying a few injuries and Mat Liddiard will not be available until August 31, so I’ve spoken to him and he’s really looking forward to it. Who knows what could happen.” He said.

Former County goalkeeper Jamie Stephens, also released by the Exiles this summer, played 45 minutes for Swindon Town on Saturday, as the trialist also hopes to secure a permanent deal.
