MANAGER Terry Butcher says the board shake-up at Newport County AFC has prevented him from adding to the squad this week.

Butcher told the Argus on Monday that he was hopeful of bringing in another player on loan to cover for injuries ahead of Saturday’s home clash with Stevenage.

But the departure of acting chairman Howard Greenhaf and other board members on Tuesday means that is now unlikely.

Butcher is due to meet with new interim chairman Tony Pring and fellow members of the Supporters Trust tonight to discuss the matter.

“We had hoped to bring someone in but I don’t think that will be the case now,” said the Exiles boss. “Well, it won’t be the case.

“Under the previous board I knew I had a little bit of money left but I’m actually meeting the new board tonight so that could be one of my first questions to them – we’ll wait and see what they say.”

Butcher expressed his surprise at Tuesday’s developments but has broadly welcomed the news.

“We’ve only played two games this season and we’ve got a new board – it’s all change,” he said.

“It’s pretty weird. I don’t know a lot but I know what I need to know, which is that it’s business as usual and we just carry on.

“The meeting will hopefully clear a few things up but I’m very happy and they’re very happy with me apparently, so that’s good and we’ll just carry on.

“I’ve been in the situation before with clubs where we’ve gone into administration or the board has changed and it can breed unrest but I don’t think that’s the case [here].

“Nothing really changes that much here unless I go and speak to them and they tell me I’ve got no more money or I’ve got half a million to spend.

“I don’t think that will be the case! It might be the former rather than the latter but we’ll see.

“I’ve got to thank the previous board for bringing me,” he added.

“It’s sad to lose them because they are good people but anything that can take this club forward and make it stronger everyone must welcome.

“If anything it makes us more united, more together and more confident.”
