NEWPORT County boss Terry Butcher has revealed the club are closing in on a new signing.

The Exiles hope to have reinforced their squad before Saturday’s clash with unbeaten Leyton Orient; both first face a daunting trip to Hartlepool United this evening.

“We have had some activity on the transfer front, we hope to have someone in before the end of the week, I have a few phone calls to make to hopefully have a new face on board in time for the Leyton Orient game,” Butcher told the Argus.

However, County are still currently confident of keeping hold of all their assets, including youngster Regan Poole.

“We’ve had no enquiries for our players and that’s pleasing, it has been very quiet. Thought things don’t generally happen until the last two days of the transfer window,” he explained.

But Butcher is hopeful the club can build on an impressive second half display against Stevenage when they head to Victoria Park.

“I hope Saturday’s second half display isn’t a benchmark, I think we can do even better,” he said.

“The boys got a great ovation at the end, that was great, it showed just what the crowd want to see, effort but also, good passing.

“The crowd are warming to the team and the players, but we’ve still got to do well and win games, especially at home to really get them with us.

“Even though there weren’t that many people there, it was a good place to be. Everyone wants to make an impact and do well.

“The way the players approach everything is first class, now we need to get wins and we are working towards that with improving performances.

“People will expect us to lose the next couple of games, it’s still early days for us with some good senior pros to come back from injury.

“We need to get some of those players back, but I am delighted with the options we are potentially going to have.”
