NEWPORT County AFC star Medy Elito says Saturday’s fight back against Leyton Orient bodes well for the season ahead, writes Andrew Penman.

County came back from 2-0 down to peg the league leaders back to 2-2 before half-time.

They eventually lost 3-2 to remain on just one point out of a possible 12 in League Two under new manager Terry Butcher.

But Elito says the team’s battling qualities and the number of chances they created against Orient shows that results will improve before too long.

“We came back to 2-2 and I thought we could win it but it’s just another setback,” he said.

“When you go 2-0 down it’s easy for heads to drop but the gaffer has instilled confidence in us.

“If we go down we keep playing and moving the ball. We kept our heads and we got it back to 2-2.

“It’s just unfortunate that we didn’t get that third goal because we played so well.

“We kept coming and kept coming but sometimes when you’re trying to force it you leave yourselves exposed at the back and that’s what happened.

“We kept plugging away and at the end we could have scored two.

“It wasn’t our day in the end but hopefully when we get that win we’ll be OK.

“We always go into games thinking we’re going to win and hopefully that will come against Plymouth on Saturday,” he added.

“And I’m sure once that win comes we’ll have a run of wins.

“Right now looking at the table it looks like we are far away from the teams at the top but if we get three wins on the bounce we can be right back in there.”

Elito also believes that new signings Zak Ansah and Josh Laurent can have a positive impact.

“They’ve only been with us for two days and they’ve trained well,” he said.

“Josh came on and looked lively and maybe next week he can start.

“But we’ve got a good team and there is going to be competition for places now.

“People want to play so hopefully everyone will get a chance.”
