TERRY Butcher admits he’s desperate for a first victory of the season but he insists tomorrow’s home clash with York City (kick-off 1pm) is far from a must-win game for Newport County AFC.

The Exiles are bottom of League Two with just one point from five games, three points and five places below the Minstermen.

And Butcher says he and the players want to reward the fans for their continued support but he denied that there is any undue pressure on the team so early in the season.

“A must-win game is when it’s the last game of the season and you must win – that’s a must-win game and that’s the only time for me,” said the Exiles boss.

“It’s a game we’d like to win and I’m sure York will be saying the same but it’s a game that we’re looking forward to immensely.

“Irrespective of ourselves and the way we’ve gone about our work and the camaraderie and spirit in the camp, we want to win it for the fans.

“What a noise it was the other night! There weren’t many in the ground but we had the drummer right behind us and the crowd got going.

“I think they enjoyed the football again and we got a round of applause coming off.

“The noise and the support we’re getting is just phenomenal, it really is.

“I’ve been absolutely gobsmacked and we just want to keep rewarding that by playing well and going that extra little bit further that it takes to get three points.

“And if we can do that then we can celebrate together.”

Alex Rodman misses today’s game with an ankle ligament problem he picked up against Swindon Town in Tuesday’s Johnstone’s Paint Trophy tie.

New signing Matt Partridge is set to play in defence, however, and Butcher is hopeful that he can add more players on loan – even if he won’t have all the proceeds from Regan Poole’s sale to Manchester United this week.

“I’ve yet to have talks with Jason Turner on that,” he said. “I haven’t had the time but we’ve got a free week next week so I’ll sit down with him then.

“It might be a brief conversation or a long conversation – I don’t know.

“But we’ll see where we are. We’ve still got a bit of money left in the original kitty anyway.

“With Kevin Feely leaving that does give us a bit more money.

“It’s not a lot but we will be bringing other players in when the loan window opens.

“If I can get a little bit more then I’ll be delighted because that opens it up a little bit more.

“But I’m not going to advertise that because then prices will go up if I go for a player so I’m not going to shoot myself in the foot.”
