NEWPORT County AFC manager Terry Butcher is hoping for a double celebration this week as he looks to guide his side out of the bottom two and the Supporters Trust takeover nears completion.

After following up a 0-0 draw at Dagenham & Redbridge with a first win of the season at Carlisle United on Saturday the Exiles will be aiming for a first home victory against Crawley Town tomorrow night.

Three points against 23rd-placed Crawley will see Butcher’s boys climb off the bottom of League Two and if Dagenham fail to beat Notts County then County will also be out of the drop zone.

“No matter how we did it, we’ve done it and it’s nice to break that hoodoo and get the win,” said Butcher after new signing Tyler Blackwood saw his header deflected in for the only goal at Brunton Park.

“It’s onwards and upwards now. We’ve got two clean sheets in a row now and four points out of six is lovely, especially on the road at two difficult places.

“We’ve had no luck so far this season but we had a slice of luck on Saturday, which is very nice when it comes your way.

“We’ll make the most of it and with Crawley and Exeter at home now we’ve got two games to look forward to.

“Hopefully the crowd will get behind us, which they normally do, and we can get some points.”

The deadline for the Trust to raise their £195,000 takeover target is midnight on Wednesday and Butcher is hoping to give the bid a boost with another win against Crawley.

“The Trust is nearly there and hopefully that will take care of itself,” said the Exiles boss. “We’ve got a lot of games to play in the next few weeks and hopefully we can give the supporters and the Trust something to cheer and put a smile on everyone’s faces.”

County will be without Danny Holmes who suffered concussion after a bang to the head while playing in central midfield on Saturday.

“He got a knee to the head,” said Butcher. “It was completely accidental but he was seeing stars and couldn’t focus.

“That’s the second week running we’ve had someone come off with a head knock and we had to make the change.”

Scott Boden replaced Holmes at Carlisle and could start against Crawley, while Blackwood could come in for teenager Aaron Collins or Lenell John-Lewis up front.

Veteran defender Matt Taylor is likely to be on the bench again after making his belated debut as a late substitute on Saturday.

“Bringing on Matt Taylor at the end was great,” said Butcher. “He won some important headers and we’ve not had that all season.

“He made an absolutely brilliant contribution at the end and his experience at the back will certainly help us.”
