DEFENDER Andrew Hughes will return to the Newport County AFC squad for Saturday’s trip to Accrington Stanley, putting an end to his 11-month injury nightmare.

The 23-year-old academy graduate has been out of action since he suffered a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in his knee against Stevenage on December 13 last year.

But, after featuring in several behind-closed doors friendlies in recent weeks and playing 70 minutes in a 2-0 win over a Swindon Town XI on Tuesday, his long wait for a first team return could be nearly over.

“It was a good performance from the reserves against a good Swindon side and it was a good attitude from the players who have not been playing,” said Exiles boss John Sheridan.

“Hughesy came through it and got 70 minutes under his belt.

“He’ll be in the squad and as more games go by he’ll get more match fit.

“It’s different from training in a match-day situation but he’s not too far off.

“It’s a boost for him. He’s worked really hard.

“I’ve been there myself – sometimes you rush back too early but he’s been patient. It’s been a long journey for him.

“Let’s not count our chickens because he’s only had a few reserve games but he’s training really well and he looks fit.

“I’m sure he can’t wait to get involved and he’s getting closer and closer.

“I feel as if he’s nearly ready and that’s why he’ll be in the squad for Saturday.

“He’ll be on the bench but I wouldn’t put him on the bench if I didn’t think he could come on and participate in the game at any time.”

Sheridan says Hughes’ return to fitness will increase his options in terms of personnel and tactical changes at the back.

“He’s left footed and will give us that bit of balance so people who are in the team know he will be pushing for a starting place,” he added.

“I saw him in the game the other day and he looked good to me.

“I think it’s important that he gets involved more with the first team now and putting him on the bench won’t do him any harm at all.

“He’ll be biting at the bit to be involved.”

Speaking at a County in the Community event on Wednesday, Hughes said: “Obviously I’m glad to be back now.

“I’m back playing and I’m looking forward to being back [in the first team].

“I don’t think many people realise how frustrating it is – they just see it from an outside point of view.

“But I’ve had so much support from the club, my family and friends.

“We had a game against Swindon, a friendly, and I played 70 minutes. I’m just building up the minutes now.”

Striker Lenell John-Lewis should be fit to feature at Accrington after shaking off a thigh problem but midfielder Tommy O'Sullivan misses the match, and Tuesday's FA Cup replay against Brackley Town, as he's on duty with the Wales under-21 squad.
