LOAN star Tommy O’Sullivan believes Newport County AFC will secure their safety today and says he’s proud to have helped the club stay in the Football League.

Victory at fellow strugglers Stevenage today will be enough to guarantee League Two football for another season – as long as York City fail to win at in-form Hartlepool United.

And O’Sullivan, now enjoying his second loan spell at Rodney Parade from Cardiff City, says survival is some achievement given the club’s poor start under Terry Butcher.

“When I first came we had six points so, given everything that happened in the first 10 or 15 games, to get where we are now I think anyone would have taken it,” said the player, who was first signed by Butcher’s replacement John Sheridan in October.

“I’m almost certain we’ll be safe. We’ve got five games left and I haven’t got any doubts.

“Whether it’s this week or the week after I think we’ll be fine.

“At the minute I think everyone is a bit wary – we’re all looking at the table and counting down the games.

“There is a little bit of pressure because nobody wants to be in a scrap at the bottom and face relegation.

“But I think once we get the win we’ll be safe and we can enjoy playing with no real pressure.”

O’Sullivan, whose older brother Sam played for County for five years up to 2008, says he’s loved his time at the club.

“I’ve enjoyed playing here,” said the Wales under-21 star. “I know some games have not been the best and not great to watch but I’ve enjoyed playing every week with the boys home and away.

“I said when I first came back [in March] I was quite shocked because half the team was different,” he added.

“There were a lot of new signings. But the main core of the team was still here and it was good to get back out on the pitch with them.

“It’s the same midfield really. I’ve played with Medy Elito and Mark Byrne all year now and I’ve enjoyed playing with the pair of them.

“Byrner is obviously a bit more experienced – he’s got loads of games under his belt so playing alongside him or having him in behind me is great.

“He gives me a bit of security and gives me and Medy licence to get forward a bit more.

“I’d like to score more and we need to create more goal scoring opportunities and put things right in the last five games.”

Meanwhile, in response to manager Warren Feeney’s remarks about the club’s training facilities, a spokesman for Llanwern School told the Argus: “The school continues to work with Newport County alongside a range of other organisations and we will be meeting with Newport County next week to discuss the partnership.”
