NEWPORT County AFC will show their support for Welsh steelworkers at Tuesday’s home fixture against Oxford United at Rodney Parade.

A statement from the club says: "The threat of closure of the Tata Steel plants at Port Talbot and Llanwern will have a significant impact on those employed, their families and the wider South Wales community.

"The club will be welcoming local steelworkers onto the pitch before the game to unveil a "Save Our Steel" banner that they will then place on the North Terrace for the remainder of the game."

Director Gavin Foxall said: “Given the club's origins there is a long history between the club and the local steel industry.

"In addition our new-found status as a community club strengthens that bond and when approached we were delighted to help in such a small way.

“We hope that leading the team out onto the pitch will help raise the profile of their plight and we know everyone in attendance at Rodney Parade on Tuesday night will show their support."

Fan Mark Turner, one of the steelworkers and Unite branch secretary, said: “Newport is a city built on its industrial heritage with steel for many years being, and continuing to be, a major part.

“Socially and economically it is important that this remains and the unions along with the support of Newport County, ‘The Ironsides’, will make sure that this important industry is still around.”

Fans are reminded that Tuesday’s game is an all-ticket fixture. More information can found on the club’s website.
