NEWPORT County defender Danny Holmes is confident, “very, very confident” in fact, of being given the chance to stay at Rodney Parade.

Signed by Terry Butcher from Tranmere Rovers last June, Holmes has made 39 appearances in all competitions this season and captained the side against Notts County last weekend.

Holmes has confirmed that no discussions over a possible new deal have taken place yet, with the Exiles set to complete their Sky Bet League Two campaign at Wimbledon this Saturday.

But the Birkenhead-born 27-year-old feels he has done enough to be at the club next term and is hopeful that boss Warren Feeney shares his view.

“We haven’t spoken about contracts so that’s a wait and see,” said Holmes. “I’ve loved my time here and I love playing for the manager, so hopefully he’ll offer me one.

“I’m very, very confident he will offer me one because I think I’ve played well at times this season.

“It’s one of them where you’ve just got to wait and see.”

Playing under three managers this season – Butcher, John Sheridan and Feeney – hasn’t been ideal for Holmes and his teammates, but it is something the right-back has taken in his stride.

And it is the third of that managerial trio who now determines whether he, and his fellow squad members, will get the chance to have another crack at League Two with Newport next term.

“I’ve been through quite a few managers in my time,” he added.

“When a new manager comes in you’ve got to start afresh and show what you’re capable of, so I’ve done really well considering I’ve played for a lot of managers.

“It’s part and parcel of being a footballer.

“There are a lot of changes with management now because if it’s not going your way the fans want a new manager, and that’s just the nature of the beast really.”

Meanwhile, looking back on a difficult season, Holmes said: “It has been a tough season. Considering what’s happened off the pitch, and dealing with the pitch, I think we’ve shown good character at times and we’ve just got the job done that we had to do.

“Obviously, we want to finish the season well because, wherever you are, you want to go into next season on the back of a win.”
