NEWPORT County defender Andrew Hughes has turned down a fresh Exiles contract and signed for Peterborough on a two-year deal.

The 24-year-old centre-back was offered a new deal by boss Warren Feeney at the end of the season but has opted to move on.

Hughes was Newport's longest serving player and last remaining player from the famous 2013 Wembley play-off triumph against Wrexham that secured a return to the Football League.

County tweeted: “The Club can confirm that Academy graduate Andrew Hughes will be leaving the club this summer.

“Andrew made his debut in 2008 at the age of 16 and went on to make 141 appearances for the club.

“We wish Andrew the very best for the future and thank him for his service to the club.”

League One side Peterborough confirmed that Hughes has joined on a two-year contract, much to the delight of their boss Grant McCann, who hinted that he sees him more as a left-back.

"Andrew is a lad I watched a few times last year and he arrives highly recommended from the manager at Rodney Parade," said McCann.

"He had a number of clubs looking at him from this division and higher so we are really pleased to have him on board.

"The left-back area is an area that I definitely needed to strengthen and we will add another one to that during the summer. Andrew is fully aware that I will be bringing another one in. I want competition for places.

"Andrew is a good player and he will definitely be threatening the starting line-up this coming season. He has played a lot of games in the Football League, he played the last 30 games last season and was very good.

"I am delighted to get this signing over the line and look forward to working with him."

Last week the Exiles announced the signing of defender Scot Bennett on a two-year deal from Notts County and that centre-back Darren Jones had put pen to paper on a fresh contract.
