NEWPORT County chief Warren Feeney insists summer signing Sean Rigg’s best position is as an out-and-out striker.

Rigg, who signed a two-year deal with the Exiles, impressed Feeney during Saturday’s 2-0 friendly loss to League One outfit Coventry City.

The 27-year-old former Bristol Rovers, Oxford United, Port Vale and Wimbledon ace has been used on the wing at previous clubs.

However, Feeney says he has seen enough of Rigg to feel that he is more suited to a centre-forward role.

The County boss was pleased with how Rigg linked up with trialist Marlon Jackson against the Sky Blues, though whether the latter joins the squad permanently is still unclear.

Rigg, a League Two promotion play-off winner with Wimbledon in May, could well feature alongside Jackson again on Tuesday night when the Exiles visit Weston-super-Mare.

Speaking after Saturday’s game, Feeney said: “I don’t think Riggy has had a rest yet but he has been fantastic this pre-season.

“He finished last season in a team that won promotion so has probably had the shortest break of anyone.

“He’s a lively character and a lot of people have played him on the wing, but for me he’s not a winger.

“He is a striker and his movement is very good. He showed that against Coventry and I thought he and Marlon did very well. We’ve got good options.

“Jon (Parkin) came on and showed he is a strong boy. We’ll obviously miss him for the first three games but it’s just about getting him up to speed.

“I probably would have given him 20 minutes but the big lad wanted to play a bit longer, and he showed some very nice touches. He’s a strong boy and I think he’ll be a fantastic option for us.”

Reflecting on the match in general, Feeney added: “I was pleased with the way we started the first half and I thought we controlled the game.

“Like I said before the game, I don’t look at results in pre-season, it’s about getting your sharpness and getting into habits. We know we’re not there yet but I was pleased.

“Obviously in the second half we faded away a bit, which is expected because there is still two weeks to go.

“It was a good workout for us bar the two goals.”

Asked if he was close to knowing his starting XI for the League Two season opener against Mansfield Town on August 6, he said: “I think we’ve got good players and I’m still trying to add players, but it’s pre-season and whoever pulls their weight will be in the team for the first game of the season.”
