NEWPORT County AFC will field a “strong” side for tonight’s friendly at Weston-super-Mare (7.30pm), according to boss Warren Feeney.

The Exiles head to the Woodspring Stadium for their sixth pre-season fixture on the back of a 2-0 defeat to Coventry City at the weekend.

And Feeney says he is expecting a more physical encounter in Somerset than the one his players had against the Sky Blues at Spytty Park.

Weston, who have already faced two Football League side this summer in Bristol Rovers and Barnsley, finished 16th in National League South last time out, avoiding relegation by just four points.

“It’s going to be another tough one for us, but, as I keep saying, it’s pre-season and it’s going to be a different kind of game,” said Feeney.

“We are working on a few things but the game is going to be different because they are two leagues below us and it will probably be more physical.”

When asked what sort of team he would be fielding, he added: “I think we’ve got to step it up a bit now.

“Obviously there will be a couple of boys that I brought on against Coventry who might get more minutes.

“We’ll have to assess the Ton Pentre game on Thursday night after tonight, but it should be a strong team that we have out at Weston.”

Feeney used 20 players, including three trialists, last Saturday, with County’s fans seeing all bar three of the club’s summer signings.

Jamie Turley was one of those not involved at Spytty Park, with Feeney confirming afterwards that the former Eastleigh defender had been suffering with a virus.

“Jamie will be involved at Weston,” said Feeney. “He has had a virus and missed a few days.

“I could have played him on Saturday but it’s one of those that if he misses a few days of pre-season then he has got to do what the other boys have done.”

County have three more pre-season games after their clash with the Seagulls in Somerset tonight.

They go to Ton Pentre on Thursday, Forest Green Rovers on Saturday and then Gloucester City next Monday.

The Ton Pentre fixture at Ynys Park in the Rhondda, rearranged because of Wales’ run to the semi-finals of Euro 2016, will be for the Brian Lomax SD Cup.

County kick-off their League Two campaign at home to Mansfield Town on August 6.
