NEWPORT County AFC boss Warren Feeney has revealed that he is targeting the Premier League for loan signings ahead of the new League Two season.

Feeney, as you would expect, is keeping the identities of any potential additions to his squad firmly under wraps.

However, he did confirm that those he has in his sights are from English football’s top tier.

“There’s one or two that I’m still trying to look at,” he said. “One is still with his club at the moment, they won’t let him go, but there’s another one I’m talking to.

“If they’re coming from the Premier League they are with their clubs right up until the last minute, so we’ve just got to be patient.

“I’m always on the lookout for players but I’m not just going to bring people in for the sake of it, they have got to be better than what we have.”

While Feeney continues to pursue his targets, he and his players travel to Forest Green Rovers on Saturday (3pm) for their penultimate pre-season friendly of the summer.

County are set to take a strong squad to The New Lawn near Stroud in Gloucestershire for their match against a side who just missed out on promotion to League Two last term.

Defender Darren Jones has trained since taking a knock to his left ankle during the 8-1 thrashing of Weston-super-Mare on Tuesday and is expected to be involved.

Striker Lenell John-Lewis was on crutches when the players and management gathered at Rodney Parade on Friday to pose for their first-team squad picture.

There is no more news on his knee injury but he continues to receive treatment from County’s medical staff.

On Forest Green, Feeney added: “They are a decent team. Mark Cooper has gone in there and he wants to play football.

“He has got a good group around him so it will be a good test for us, but I don’t look at the results.

“You can win or you can get beaten and everyone will be saying this is how they are going to do this season, but it doesn’t work like that.

“The points are there to be won next Saturday and that’s what we’ll be looking for.”
