AN angry Warren Feeney said his Newport County AFC side were not ruthless enough during their defeat to a hugely inexperienced MK Dons outfit in the first round of the EFL Cup.

County threw away a 2-0 lead at Rodney Parade on Tuesday night to lose 3-2, with substitute Dean Bowditch netting a 90th-minute winner for the League One visitors.

A Marlon Jackson goal and Mark Randall penalty had put the Exiles in command before a Bowditch spot-kick and Ben Tilney screamer levelled things up.

With the tie set for extra-time, Bowditch produced a superb finish from the edge of the box to seal his side’s place in the next round.

“I’m angry because I thought we were comfortable in the game,” said County boss Feeney. “We got ourselves into a great position.

“You’re never going to do it for 90 minutes, but whenever they have a strong period you’ve got to be resilient.

“Obviously you could see why Bowditch is a Championship player. I thought he showed fantastic quality with his finish at the end.

“From our point of view, I thought we started well, got ourselves in a good position, but we can’t keep conceding goals. We did that and lost the game.”

Feeney, who also saw his team concede late on against Mansfield last Saturday, added: “I thought we weren’t ruthless enough. I thought we really could have put it to bed in the first half.

“We should have won two games but when you don’t take chances you always know that if the other team get a chance then they could.

“There were some good passages of play and the team is still getting together, but it’s a defeat and I’m disappointed.”
