NEWPORT County AFC go in search of a first home win since March tomorrow and manager Warren Feeney says he doesn’t want negativity from some fans to affect his players.

County, who are 22nd in League Two, take on bottom club Cambridge United aiming to halt a run of 10 league games without a victory at Rodney Parade.

The poor home form stretches back into the reigns of John Sheridan, Terry Butcher and Jimmy Dack.

The Exiles have delivered just five wins in front of their own fans since Justin Edinburgh’s departure in February 2015, with 11 victories on the road in the same period.

Feeney cannot identify the reasons for such a disappointing record but he wants the supporters to get behind the players tomorrow.

Asked about the home form he said: “It’s crazy. You want to win your home games and pick up points away and it is a crazy stat – even from before I came.

“We need to put our home form right – we need to start winning home games and the players know that.

“Hopefully it will turn on Saturday.

“I think behind me in the dugout the fans have been fantastic,” he added.

“You can hear them and that’s what we want on Saturday – we want them behind us.

“We don’t want any negativity rubbing off on the players.

“Look at [Jose] Mourinho – all of a sudden he’s a bad manager because he’s lost three on the bounce and Rooney’s the worst player – I don’t take any notice.

“I think the fans have been absolutely fantastic. They’ll always moan – I moaned when Celtic beat Rangers, my club – but I don’t take no notice. I just worry about those players.”

With his side having conceded 12 goals in seven matches so far Feeney was also asked if he’d consider a change in formation at the back.

“What formation wins football matches? Players win football matches,” he said.

“People will always jump to these formations they’re playing on their computers on Championship Manager but players win football matches.

“It’s about confidence and momentum and I don’t think we’ve been playing bad but we haven’t won at home.

“We’ve drawn but I’m a believer in you start with a point and the worst scenario is you finish with a point but hopefully we can go one better and get the three points.”
