NEWPORT County AFC captain Scot Bennett aims to show former club Notts County what they’re missing when the sides meet at Meadow Lane tomorrow.

Bennett’s move from Exeter City to Nottingham in the summer of 2015 didn’t work out and he was loaned to the Exiles and York City last season before making a permanent move to Rodney Parade in June.

And as Graham Westley’s men look to continue their recent good form and climb off the bottom of League Two, Bennett would love to get one over on his former employers.

“It’s going to be a bit different but it’s one that I’m looking forward to,” said the 25-year-old.

“I don’t think I showed my potential when I was there last year so it will be something I’ll be looking to do – go back and hopefully put my mark on the game.

“And hopefully the team can put on a good performance and we can pick up the points.

“I feel I didn’t quite get the chances there,” he added. “I was always playing out of position and when I did play I thought I did OK but I got a couple of injuries and then was sent out on loan.

“It happens in football. I enjoyed my time there and I enjoyed getting to know the lads and the staff.

“But now I’ve moved on. I’m here and I’m looking forward to the rest of the season here.”

Bennett was grateful to Notts manager John Sheridan – the man who initially brought him to Newport on loan last season – for agreeing to his early release from a two-year contract at the Midlands club.

“He just got the job as it was all going through down here and he carried on and let the deal go through,” he said.

“I’m happy that he did that because I wanted to get out of Notts and I enjoyed my football here last season so it was something I was happy to do.”

On former Exiles boss Sheridan, who took over at Notts after a brief spell at Oldham Athletic, Bennett said: “He’s a good manager. He’s always done well at the clubs he goes to.

“He got Oldham out of trouble as well last year and from what I can see at Notts, from being there last year, he’s turned them round.

“It will be weird going up against him but it’s something I’ll look forward to and hopefully we can pick up the points and put one over on them.”
