SEAN Rigg has seen his last two penalties saved but he’s ready to take responsibility again should Newport County AFC earn a spot-kick at Plymouth Argyle in the FA Cup tomorrow.

Rigg recovered to score from the rebound as the Exiles went on to win 3-0 at Notts County on November 19 but they paid the penalty at Blackpool last Saturday.

It was 1-1 at Bloomfield Road when home goalkeeper Sam Slocombe kept out Rigg’s effort from the spot and the hosts went on to win 4-1.

After that match manager Graham Westley suggested that there would be a change of penalty taker but Rigg doesn’t want to step down.

“If we get one I will be taking it, unless I’m told I’m not allowed to take them,” said the 28-year-old. “We’ll have to see.

“It was more in the corner at Blackpool than the previous week.

“There was a question whether I should have changed where I went with the penalty but it’s all down to mind games at the end of the day.

“It’s a gamble for the keeper – they could choose to go where I went with the last one and it pay off or I change it up.

“So a bit of it is down to luck but I should have done better. I should have put a bit more power on it and made sure it went in.”

Rigg believes County can get back to winning ways at Home Park after successive defeats in the league saw them return to the bottom of the table.

“Obviously we played Plymouth not so long ago and we had a player sent off early and lost but I think we played well so if we can keep 11 men on the pitch it will be a good game.

“All the boys are looking forward to it and I don’t see why we can’t go down there and get a result.

“They’ve lost the last three and we’ve lost the last two but we’ve moved on from that and we’ll go down there looking to get a result.”

Rigg is also relishing Tuesday’s home clash with Stevenage, which could see the Exiles climb off the bottom of the table.

“The games are coming thick and fast at this time of year and we’ve been playing well,” said Rigg.

“Forget about the last two games, we’ve shown some form and definitely picked up results.

“Tuesday night is a massive game for us as well but for now we’ll concentrate on Plymouth.”
