LEE Minshull has every confidence in former teammate Michael Flynn making the most of his chance in the Newport County AFC hotseat.

Fans’ favourite Minshull spent more than three years at Rodney Parade, lining up alongside Flynn in the Conference Premier play-off final victory over Wrexham in 2013.

Flynn was announced as County’s caretaker manager yesterday following Graham Westley’s sacking after just five months in charge.

County face a mammoth task to avoid dropping out of the Football League this season – with a dozen games left they are 11 points from safety.

While saving them might be mission impossible, Minshull believes Flynn is the ideal choice to step in.

“I think he will bring pride to the role,” said the Bromley midfielder.

“He has obviously got that local link and that is a great starting point to have.

“He has had a great career and people look up to him, I know the lads did when I was there.

“This is a great opportunity for Flynny and I can see no reason why he can’t do well in the job.

“He’ll be really proud to do it and will give the club every chance of staying up – I know he is going to enjoy it.”

Reacting further to the recent developments at his old employers, Minshull went on to add: “It’s a shame because I really thought Graham Westley would get them out of the situation they were in.

“It gives me no pleasure whatsoever to see a former club in the relegation zone, I have fond memories of my time at the club and I’ve still got friends there.

“They have fought hard to be where they are, but on the flip side the club has been through worse and come out the other side.”

Minshull’s Bromley contract is up at the end of the season but he has ruled out a return to his old Rodney Parade home.

“A few people have asked me if I’d like to go back to Newport,” he said.

“If it was purely about playing football then I would love to go back at some point, but I have a family and it would mean moving them as well.”

County go to Crewe Alexandra tomorrow (kick-off 3pm).
