NEWPORT County AFC have made the perfect start to life under Michael Flynn but the caretaker boss is keen to keep things in perspective given the massive task that lies ahead.

Flynn was given the reins of the Exiles until the end of the season after a shocking run of form resulted in Graham Westley being sacked last Wednesday.

Since then 36-year-old Flynn has guided County to wins at Crewe and Morecambe, results that helped lift the club off the foot of the League Two table.

They are still seven points adrift of safety but have a game in hand over their relegation rivals.

“It’s been a great start but we won’t be getting carried away,” said Flynn. “We’re still in a difficult position and have a lot of hard work to do. As it stands we’re relying on other clubs to slip up.

“We’ve got to take care of our own business and get some more wins under our belt, starting against a very good Blackpool team.”

He added: “There’s nothing to celebrate, we’ve won a couple of matches and we’re still 23rd in the table, and until we’re 22nd and above I won’t be happy about anything.

“Come May 6 and the last game against Notts County at home, I want to be out of the relegation zone and still be a League Two club next season.”

Flynn also paid tribute to his squad for the way they have dealt with the recent upheaval at Rodney Parade.

“I’ve tried to encourage them to express themselves a bit more and play with a smile on their faces,” he said.

“It’s always tough when managers go and they’ve had a difficult season, but I think they’ve responded brilliantly for me and it’s something I’m really grateful for.

“At the end of the day, it’s their careers, so they need to do it for themselves, as well as the fans and the club.”
