A DRAMATIC late twist at Bristol Rovers saw the 10-man Newport County AFC youth team pick up their sixth win from seven games in the EFL Youth Alliance Merit League One.

The young Exiles, coached by 2013 promotion-winner Byron Anthony, included former first team squad members Dion Molyneux, Finlay Wood and Liam Angel and star performers Momodou Touray and Rhys Kavanagh.

The game started at a fast tempo for both sides but Rovers had the majority of the attacking play and the hosts' strikers kept under-15 goalkeeper Lewis Webb on his toes.

Webb dealt well with a few dangerous through balls but could to nothing to stop the first goal, which was slotted into the far corner in the 13th minute.

As the half went on, the County boys had their chances.

Captain Angel had a great opportunity following a superb delivery from Evan Press but he headed wide at the back post.

And in-form striker Touray had the ball in the net only for the goal to be ruled out due to an offside flag.

Two minutes before the end of the first half Liam Warman showed his pace and power to win the ball back and start off a great run down the right wing.

And he whipped in a cross that was finished neatly by Kavanagh to make it 1-1 at the break.

As the second half went on both team created chances and Newport’s young shot stopper made a great tip onto the bar to keep it level while Bristol also had a goal disallowed for offside.

In the 81st minute, during a County corner, Touray was sent off after an altercation in the box.

The resulting free-kick was miskicked by the Rovers’ goalkeeper, straight into the feet of Kavanagh.

The striker, who recently earned a trial with the Swansea City academy, forced an excellent save from the ‘keeper.

But Lewis Collins, younger brother of former County star Aaron, pounced on the rebound and finished calmly into the far corner in the 82nd minute to complete the comeback.

The young Exiles remain unbeaten in the league and are sitting at the top of the table ahead this week’s trip to Gillingham.
