MICHAEL Flynn would like to add three or four more players to his squad before Newport County AFC return for pre-season training at the end of the month but he insists he will not be rushed.

The County boss signed midfielder Matty Dolan on a two-year deal last week and extended goalkeeper-coach James Bittner’s stay at Rodney Parade for another year.

Those two deals swelled the Exiles squad to 18 players for the 2017-2018 season.

Winger Jennison Myrie-Williams is the only member of the 2016-2017 squad yet to agree a new contract or be released this summer.

Flynn’s main focus is still on strengthening the attack and he remains in discussions with several targets but he’s prepared to take his time to get the right man at the right price.

“I’m speaking to a few people and I’m just waiting for their responses now,” said the manager.

“I don’t want to rush into the wrong deal or sign the wrong man.

“At the moment everyone is asking for too much money and we’ve only got a certain amount to play with.

“But the longer the summer goes on people will lower their expectations and we will be able to get people in at a price we can afford.

“We might need three more or we might need four. It depends on what we can afford.

“But I will never put the club in jeopardy by spending money we haven’t got.”

Aaron Williams and Marlon Jackson, who got four goals between them last season, are the only out-and-out strikers on the books after the departures of Ryan Bird, Lenell John-Lewis, Craig Reid and Tom Meechan this summer.

“My main focus is on strengthening in attack and hopefully there will be some good news soon,” added the Exiles boss.

“I’d like to get most deals done by the time we’re back in for pre-season training on June 29.”

The new one-year contract for Bittner was confirmed on Saturday.

The 35-year-old made two appearances last season and his main role will once again be as coach to number one Joe Day.

Bittner will also assist Flynn, coach Wayne Hatswell and first team management consultant Lennie Lawrence on match days.

“James has a good relationship with Joe,” he said. “They work really well together and that is important.

“He’s also another set of eyes on the bench alongside myself, Wayne and Lennie and it’s good to have him on board.”

Flynn says he may add a younger stopper to the squad closer to the big kick-off in August.

“It’s possible we’ll look at signing another goalkeeper,” he added.

“I’ve been offered a few but most of them are number twos and they want too much money for number twos.

“But we will always be able to sign a young goalkeeper on loan so that is the least of my worries at the moment.”
