NEWPORT County AFC manager Michael Flynn will again run the rule over several trialists during tomorrow night’s pre-season friendly at Barry Town United (kick-off 7.30pm).

Four trialists featured in Saturday’s 4-1 win at Gloucester City when new signings Frank Nouble and Matty Dolan both chipped in with two goals.

But striker Marlon Jackson suffered a hamstring injury towards the end of the friendly in Evesham and is a doubt for the start of the League Two campaign at Stevenage on August 5.

Flynn is still looking to add to his attacking options and he started with a trialist striker at Gloucester.

A left-winger also featured in the second half, as did former County midfielder Ben Swallow, while an unnamed left-back also played the first 45 minutes.

And Flynn says he will continue to give potential signings a chance to impress over the next week.

“It’ll be mostly trialists and younger players [at Barry], if I’m honest,” said the Exiles boss, back from a UEFA Pro Licence study trip to Portugal.

“A lot of first-team players will be there but maybe not on the pitch.

“With the 3G pitch I have to be careful. A lot of them get reactions when they play on that and, as much as it’s my old club, I’ve got to make sure it’s right for Newport County and the players.

“I was gutted for Marlon,” he added. “It looks like he has pulled him hamstring so we’ll know more next week.

“He’s looked really sharp in training and the matches so it’s put a downer on the day.”

Asked about potential targets, Flynn said: “I know we need more in attack. I think everyone knows that but I won’t be rushing into anything.

“I thought the trialist [up front] did quite well. He worked really hard and he’s got experience in League One and League Two so he’s definitely someone who we’ll be looking at further.

“Smith, the left winger who came on in the second half, showed some good touches and some good attacking options. He’s full of pace and I’ll need to see more of him.

“And the left-back did really well. They’ve all done alright, to be fair, but I need to be selective in what I do. You can’t sign everyone who comes through the door and we have released a lot.

“But I’ll look at trialists as long as I think they can improve us.”

Swallow played with Flynn at Rodney Parade during the 2012-2013 promotion-winning season and the Exiles boss sees the midfielder as a potential squad player.

“Ben Swallow did well. Is he ready? That’s a decision I’ll have to make next week,” he said.

“I wouldn’t say he’s improved because he’s always had that football ability but he’s definitely more mature and he’s a lot fitter than he used to be.

“Am I looking at him to be a regular starter? No. Could he be one to have on the bench to affect things now and then? Maybe he could.”
