FORMER Newport County AFC captain Scot Bennett is determined to return to action at Coventry City today and make a positive impact after a difficult start to the season.

The 26-year-old was substituted midway through the second half in the opening match at Stevenage after two errors led to goals for the hosts.

Bennett’s poor back pass allowed Stevenage to go 1-0 up and he then conceded a penalty that led to a second goal before County fought back to draw 3-3.

And, moved from centre-back to midfield, Bennett was forced off with an ankle knock in the Exiles’ 2-0 Carabao Cup win at Southend United.

He missed last week’s 1-1 draw at Crewe Alexandra but should be fit to play at the Ricoh Arena today and, if selected, he’ll be raring to go. “It’s not the start I was looking for,” he said. “I came back in pre-season and I thought I was doing well.

“Stevenage was just one of those games where unfortunately I put in a silly back pass and then a tackle that was a risk of a penalty.

“Obviously it’s not the start I wanted. I felt I cost the team two points there because I think we would have won the game if it wasn’t for those two mistakes.

“And then the knock at Southend meant I missed the game at Crewe but I went up there to support the boys and hopefully I’ll be fit and ready to go this weekend.

“I’ve trained without any problems so I don’t see why I shouldn’t be up for selection.”

And, with teenager Ben White impressing at centre-back in the last two games, Bennett says he’s ready to do a job wherever he’s required.

“I’m happy to play wherever the gaffer sees fit,” he said.

“I’ve played in numerous positions throughout my career so I’m used to it.

“If he wants me to play in midfield or at the back I’m happy to do that.”

Looking ahead to today’s match and Tuesday’s cup clash at Leeds United, Bennett says the whole squad are relishing the challenges ahead.

“I think everyone is looking forward to it,” he said.

“Coventry are a big club with a big stadium and obviously they’ve won both of their games but we’re looking forward to going there, putting in a good performance and hopefully winning three points.

“There’s no fear factor. We’ve got a good togetherness and we look forward to games like this.

“We want to upset the odds and take the three points.

“The lads are all really excited about Coventry and Leeds. They are both really big clubs and they are the games you want to play in.

“You want to go to the big stadiums and put in a good performance.”

And Bennett believes the unbeaten Exiles are not too far away from a first league victory.

“I think we’ve done really well so far and we’re a bit disappointed that we haven’t won at least one of the two [league games] because I think we were dominant in both,” he added.

“Obviously in the first one I made a couple of mistakes and the lads dug me out.

“And at Crewe we were unlucky to concede just after they’d gone down to 10 men and unfortunately we couldn’t put away one of the chances we created.

“We need to be more ruthless in front of goal and hopefully we’ll have that bit of luck as well.”
