MICHAEL Flynn had a big smile on his face after celebrating the birth of his son with a shock win at Coventry City.

Baby Samuel arrived on Thursday night and Flynn left wife Victoria with the new born and his older brother Edward to watch his Newport County AFC claim all three points at the Ricoh Arena.

Debutant Reece Cole scored the only goal on 53 minutes when his shot somehow beat Sky Blues goalkeeper Liam O’Brien, who will certainly not be smiling when he sees the match video.

“I’m very pleased,” said Flynn. “I’ve had a bit of a busy week and that was a very sweet win to come here, keep a clean sheet and put in a performance like we did against a very good Coventry team.

“It’s been a lovely week and that win was for my wife and my new boy Samuel and I’d like to thank the players for putting in the performance that they did and keeping that smile on my face.”

The winner may have had an element of fortune about it but Flynn’s men fully deserved their first win of the League Two campaign thanks to a superb defensive display.

“There was no luck involved; if you don’t buy a ticket for the lottery, you won’t win it,” said the Exiles boss of Cole’s winner.

“If you don’t shoot, you don’t score. It’s as simple as that so I’ll never say it was luck.

“If they want to say it was bad luck with the keeper making a mistake then that’s up to them but I’m happy.”

Flynn is also delighted that he does not have the distraction of an impending birth ahead of Tuesday’s Carabao Cup clash at Leeds United.

“I’ve had Edward, the little one, with me while the wife takes it easy in hospital and baby Samuel is going to run riot now as well so it’s been a good week,” he added.

“There was never any chance of me missing the game. My wife is that special, she even planned the baby early!

“He was nearly three weeks early and now she hasn’t got to worry about it coming while I’m away.

“She was amazing. It’s put a big smile on my face.”
