NEWPORT County AFC manager Michael Flynn has happy memories of taking on Leeds United at Elland Road and he’s relishing tomorrow night’s Carabao Cup clash.

After Saturday’s 1-0 win at Coventry City in League Two, County are aiming to shock Championship giants Leeds in the League Cup.

Flynn’s last visit to Elland Road came in August 2011 when he scored for League Two Bradford City in a televised cup tie at the famous old ground.

Fellow Welshman Jack Compton, who went on to play for County last season, scored Bradford’s opener and Flynn made it 2-1 with a stunning effort.

Leeds came back to win the tie 3-2 but the Exiles boss can’t wait to return.

“It’s going to be brilliant,” he said. “I was fortunate enough to play there for Bradford live on Sky in exactly the same competition and I scored a 30-yarder with my left foot into the top corner.

South Wales Argus:

“It was a big derby, nearly 37,000 there and it was a great atmosphere.

“I played there before for Gillingham as well and it’s a great stadium and a great club with amazing history.

“They’ve had some legends as players and managers there over the years at Leeds United and we’re all looking forward to it but we have to go there and give a good account of ourselves.

“It’s a tough ask, we know that, but if the players don’t look forward to this then they’re probably in the wrong game.”

Leeds have agreed to let the Exiles keep 45 per cent of the gate receipts, despite the fact that the tie had to be switched from Rodney Parade and Flynn is full of praise for the Yorkshire side.

“The gesture that they’ve made to the club with an even share of the gate money is brilliant,” he said.

“It’s a nice touch of class and it doesn’t go unnoticed so I’d like to thank Leeds for that.

“It’s huge for the club. I said I wanted whoever would make the club the most money and, outside the big Premier League boys, I think Leeds are one of those clubs so it’s a good draw for us.

“If we beat Leeds hopefully we can get another big draw and fill the coffers. I’m sure the board will be happy with that.

“But our bread and butter is the league. I want to get up that table and start getting points on the board as quickly as possible.

“Anything else in the cups is a bonus. That’s how we look at it but we’re going there to win the game.”

If Flynn’s men do manage to win they will be in the hat for the third round draw on Thursday.

But County fans will have to set their alarms for 4.15am to follow the draw live from Beijing.
