LOAN star Reece Cole is targeting another goal against Leeds United tonight after admitting he did not see the ball go in after he hit the winner at Coventry City on Saturday.

The teenage midfielder, on loan from Brentford, marked his Newport County AFC debut by scoring the only goal at the Ricoh Arena.

But Cole had to watch the TV highlights to get a full picture of his first goal in senior football.

The 19-year-old revealed afterwards that he was not watching as Sky Blues goalkeeper Liam O’Brien fumbled his shot into the net.

“I kind of turned away because I thought he had it in his hands and then a couple of the boys started screaming and I looked up to see it had gone in,” said Cole.

“But to get a goal in my first game for Newport is very pleasing. I was buzzing. It was a great feeling.”

County held on to win 1-0 and claim their first win in League Two and they are full of confidence ahead of tonight’s Carabao Cup second round tie at Leeds.

“It was brilliant,” said Cole. “The last 20 minutes we were defending and you could see the boys at the back were getting stuck in and clearing headers and that’s what we needed to do to get the three points.

“It is a statement of intent. We weren’t scared. They are a good side but we’re a good side too and that’s what we showed.

“I’ve been very impressed with what I’ve seen so far,” he added.

“It was frustrating not to come on at Crewe last week but I’d only been here a couple of days before so I just had to train hard and earn the start.

“Hopefully I’ve done myself justice to keep my place.”

After excelling at the Ricoh, Cole can’t wait to show what he can do at Elland Road tonight.

“It’s a great stadium, the pitch is lovely and that’s what we want really,” he said.

“Playing against big clubs like Coventry and Leeds is what dreams are made of.

“It will be a big crowd again and it’s what you grow up as a young boy wanting to do. It’s great for my learning experience.

“I like getting forward and getting goals. Obviously as a midfielder you have to do both sides of the game but I like taking the glory!”

And Cole believes there is every chance of another famous victory for the Exiles tonight, especially with the passionate travelling support behind them.

“Obviously we’ve got to keep our heads but we’ll be confident, especially with the fans behind us,” he said.

“They travel a long way to support us and they are the 12th man for us.

“Hopefully we get the same support at Leeds and we can get the win for them again.”
