NEWPORT County AFC could be about to spend a big chunk of the cash earned from last night’s Carabao Cup tie at Leeds United with striker Padraig Amond expected to complete his move from Hartlepool United.

The Hartlepool Mail is reporting that Amond is expected to seal his move to County today after telling Pools last week that he no longer wanted to play for the club.

The Mail states that the 29-year-old “will put pen to paper with the League Two side in a deal which could be worth up to £40,000 for Pools.”

There were 17,098 fans at Elland Road to see Leeds beat Michael Flynn’s men 5-1 and the Exiles are due to receive 45 per cent of the gate receipts.

“That was the most important thing to me,” said Flynn after the match.

“It would have been excellent if we’d won and got an even bigger draw in the next round but the most important thing was getting some finances in for the club.”

Asked if he would be able to sign Amond, Flynn said: “I don’t know. We’ll have to see what happens.

“We had an offer turned down for him at the beginning of the summer and that’s how it is at the moment.

“I’d definitely like someone in before Saturday but I’ll have to speak that the powers that be.”

Hartlepool appear to be preparing for life without the Irish front man as they make a move for ex-Gateshead striker Ryan Bowman.

County co-chairman Gavin Foxall once again thanked Leeds for their offer of 45 per cent of the gate receipts from Tuesday’s tie.

“We were speaking to the Leeds United chief executive and their board and I thanked them for their generosity,” he said.

“I said to them that it meant an awful lot and we very much appreciated the decision they made to give us a share of the gate.

“They didn’t have to do that. It was very generous of them and I thought the crowd was really good.

“It helps with the coffers and what we need to do to press on.

“I don’t know how much it will be yet. I’m not sure how it will pan out but I’m sure we’ll find out over the next few days.”

Asked if there could be more signings before the August 31 transfer deadline, Foxall said: “Obviously that’s a decision for Michael in terms of what he wants to do.

“I think we’ve got strength in depth in the squad now and the type of football that we’re playing this year is great.”

The Exiles spent some money on accommodation for the squad in Leeds after the match.

“After the amount of travelling that they’ve had to do Michael asked if they could stay up and that’s the right decision for them,” added Foxall.

“They’ll have a good rest now and prepare for the game on Saturday, which I think we’re all looking forward to.”
