AFTER a frustrating three weeks on the bench, midfielder Matty Dolan is keen to keep his place in the Newport County starting XI for tonight’s Checkatrade Trophy clash with Swansea City under-21s.

Dolan returned to the Exiles midfield at the weekend and created both goals as Michael Flynn’s men cruised to a 2-0 home win over Yeovil Town thanks to goals from Padraig Amond and Joss Labadie.

County are back at Rodney Parade tonight (kick-off 7.30pm) with £10,000 in prize money on offer for victory over the Swans academy stars.

Flynn says he will make changes but Dolan wants to play if he recovers from a knock that forced him off on Saturday.

“I put myself up for every game,” said the 24-year-old.

“I’ll manage my knock and see how we go but hopefully I’ll be ready and fighting fit.

“We want to get another win here and make sure we keep that momentum going.”

And Dolan knows that he has to be at his best to maintain his starting spot due to the strong competition for places in midfield.

“It’s obviously nice to be back in,” he said. “It’s frustrating for any player being sat on the bench but the lads have been brilliant.

“Everyone has been fantastic to a man. There’s a lot of competition for places so it’s nice that the gaffer has put me back in and I’ve got a couple of assists. It was a good win for us.

“Obviously the gaffer showed faith in me to put me back in and I’d like to think I repaid him.

“It [being dropped] is part and parcel of football and it just shows the strength we’ve got in our squad at the minute.

“You’ve just got to do the right things when you’re not playing; train hard, keep on top of it and obviously when you do get your chance you’ve got to make sure you make an impact.

“And I’d like to think I did that.

“The gaffer talked about my set-piece delivery when he brought me in and it was nice to put them on the money and the boys put them away so well done to Labs and Podge.”

Mark O’Brien and Robbie Willmott could both be fit to play tonight but Flynn may delay their return until Saturday’s trip to Forest Green Rovers.
