NEWPORT County AFC manager Michael Flynn insists he and his players won’t get carried away after Saturday’s superb win at Swindon Town.

County ended their six-game winless streak in League Two with a 1-0 victory at the County Ground thanks to Ben Tozer’s 76th-minute header.

It was a result and a performance to delight Flynn and the 880 travelling army of supporters after recent disappointments against Port Vale, Accrington Stanley and Barnet.

The three points lifted the Exiles to ninth in the table and within two points of the play-off places but Flynn knows there is still room for him and his team to improve.

“There’s been errors and a lot of mistakes over the last three games when we have conceded but the boys didn’t make many at all [on Saturday],” he said.

“I thought they were outstanding, every one of them.

“There were things we wanted to address,” he added.

“I don’t think I’m the finished article; we get things wrong off the pitch, on the sidelines, and we want to improve.

“We’ve won but there will still be things we want to improve on.

“We look at ourselves, we criticise ourselves and we try to improve every day – on and off the pitch – and as a club that’s what we need to do.”

Flynn was without Mark O’Brien and Robbie Willmott because of injury on Saturday and then saw Scot Bennett forced off.

Academy prospects Jay Foulston and Momodou Touray were unused substitutes and the manager is already looking forward to being able to strengthen his squad in the January transfer window.

“We’ve got a few injuries so that makes the win even more special,” said the Exiles boss.

“I put two academy boys on the bench and one of them played the night before so that tells you where we are at the minute.

“It’s a pity it’s not January tomorrow.

“We’ve got to freshen-up and bring some faces in but it’s onwards and upwards.”

Flynn added: “It’s a different injury with Mark. It’s not his foot – that’s OK, that’s improved.

“But he got clattered at Accrington and his shin was swollen. And he got kicked on it again against Barnet.

“Scot’s just tweaked his abductor but he’s got the extra day this week to recover and I’m positive because he’s been very consistent lately.”
