NEWPORT County AFC goal hero Robbie Willmott has revealed that talk of Tottenham Hotspur has been banned as the Exiles focus on their League Two promotion push.

Excitement is building throughout the city ahead of the FA Cup fourth round tie against Premier League giants Spurs on January 27.

But County have two league games at Rodney Parade before their massive cup clash and Willmott is adamant that the players will be fully focused on maintaining their play-off challenge.

“It’s been a brilliant start to the year for us,” said Willmott, who scored the first goal in Saturday’s 2-1 win at Grimsby Town.

“We said to ourselves before the game that this was where we start our campaign to hopefully get promoted and it was a real resilient and dogged performance in the end.

“Some teams go on a cup run and forget about the league campaign but for us we put the league campaign first.

“We won’t mention anything about the FA Cup until the week leading up to it.

“There’s no talk of Tottenham – we’re not allowed to mention Tottenham.

“The manager decided that, but we’re all professional enough to know that the league campaign is the most important thing.

“Spurs will be a great day out for everyone to do with the club but our first aim is promotion.

“It’s Crawley next and everyone is focused on that.

“We’ve been really consistent this year with three wins out of three and we know we’ve got to maintain that and go four out of four against Crawley.”

South Wales Argus:

A Friday night kick-off gives County a chance to move up to fifth in the table ahead of the Saturday games and they will be cheered on by a bumper crowd all hoping to secure tickets for the Spurs tie.

“I see that there’s going to be 5,000 there and that’s obviously what we want to play in front of all the time,” said Willmott.

“We’re really happy with the tickets being sold. The support we’re getting is fantastic and the lads are just hoping to put another win on the board for the fans.

“Obviously we play before everyone else at the weekend so we can put a bit of pressure on the teams around us if we can get a win.

“If they see that we’ve won again hopefully it puts more pressure on them and they feel like they’ve got to keep up with us then.

“That’s all we’ve got to do – keep on winning and let people around us worry about us.”

Willmott now has two goals in three games this year after netting the winner against Exeter City on New Year’s Day and putting in a man of the match performance in the cup win over Leeds United.

“The gaffer has given me a licence in a front three to play both sides,” he explained.

“Me and Frank [Nouble] can switch, which is good for both of us – and I scored from the left.

“I’ve just got to keep the good performances going and keep scoring goals.”
