NEWPORT County AFC manager Michael Flynn says he and his players are desperate to give the fans a home win this afternoon.

County have not won at Rodney Parade since January 19 when they beat Crawley Town to briefly climb to fifth in the League Two table.

They have recorded just one victory in the 12 league matches since then – a 2-0 success at Yeovil Town on March 10.

The Exiles have dropped to 13th in the table and their hopes of making the play-offs are all but over.

But Flynn still hopes to end the season on a high, starting with three points today against Swindon Town, who are still in contention for a top-seven finish.

“I just want three points,” said the manager. “I don’t care who it’s against, I want the three points.

“I want to give the fans a home win because 99 per cent of them have been fantastic all season and they deserve it.

“They showed up last weekend. The crowd of over 4,000 really surprised me because it was almost a dead rubber game.

“We had a small chance [of making the play-offs] but they showed up and I think they’ve been fantastic all season and they should all be proud of themselves – especially the ones who have followed us away as well.”

South Wales Argus:

Flynn (above) was critical of some supporters who have questioned the players’ motivation in recent weeks and the no members of the squad spoke to the media before today’s game.

“The minute you start worrying about other people you start taking your eye off the ball,” he added.

“We’ve got to concentrate on ourselves. For that reason there will be no players doing an interview. I think they can do their talking on the pitch.

“As much as it’s good for the fans to hear what the players have to say, at times actions speak louder than words.

“We’re low on numbers and we’re going through a bit of a bad run of form but hopefully we’ll get the right response on Saturday.”

Phil Brown’s Swindon have drawn their last four matches but Flynn is certainly not expecting an easy afternoon.

“We’re playing against a team who are going for the play-offs, or who are in a better position than us to go for the play-offs,” he said.

“They’ve got a very good manager and they are a very good club with lots of tradition.

“They’ve got some very good players as well so it’s going to be tough.

“They’ll want to come here and capitalise on our poor home form of late and we’ve got to make sure we put the wrongs right.”
