Exiles in a league of their own

NEWPORT County boss Dean Holdsworth hailed his side’s ‘massive’ win as the Exiles opened up a stunning 17-point gap atop the Blue Square South with a thrilling 3-2 victory at Bromley.

The Exiles tore into Bromley and were 2-0 up thanks to Paul Cochlin and Charlie Henry before the hosts stunned the Exiles with a three-minute double salvo.

However, the league leaders weren’t to be denied, with Sam Foley sealing a fine win that delighted the manager.

“It was a great performance after a very hard week, it’s a fantastic result, after the match at York, all the travelling and time spent on coaches, to produce that performance is outstanding, it’s a massive result for us,” Holdsworth said.

“We had some good possession, I was very pleased with a lot of our stuff, we could’ve had one or two more goals, but their goalkeeper was very good.

“But when they came back like they did, for us to react that way (by scoring the winner) just shows the character that we’ve got. We responded magnificently, we didn’t lie down to get beaten, because we’ve got a winning mentality.

“We were led by Sam Foley, you can move him like a chess piece, and I was really pleased he scored the winner, he was fantastic.”

Holdsworth was as surprised as anyone to see his side concede two goals, individual mistakes allowing Bromley back into the match.

“We were comfortable but then we had an uncharacteristic little spell, but we’ve got four or five match-winners and that always gives us a chance.

“We got a great third goal, the goalkeeper was pulling off loads of saves and we’re delighted because it’s been a great month for us.

“It’s a huge win, I respect Bromley very much and it was a good game of football to watch.

“I was pleased Paul Cochlin scored, I told Chris Todd that I had to keep Paul in and his reaction was excellent, he was fine with it.

“I need every one of the players to be with us, we’re going to need them all and I hope they understand that.”
