County closing in on top striker
NEWPORT County boss Justin Edinburgh will today attempt to tie up a deal for one of his top summer targets, writes Michael Pearlman.
The Argus can reveal that the Exiles are closing in on the signing of a striker, just released by a Conference club, with an excellent pedigree at this level.
He will travel to Newport today and be shown around Rodney Parade before contract talks with Edinburgh.
If he signs, County are likely to make an official announcement this afternoon. The Argus has agreed not to name the player who is believed to have also had offers from other Conference clubs.
The Exiles have had a productive week on the transfer front, already adding defender Tony James, striker Jefferson Louis and midfielder Jake Thomson to their ranks.
The overhaul of the squad also continued yesterday with left winger/defender Andy Sandell penning a one-year deal.
Sandell proved an extremely popular capture last term after joining on a non-contract basis from Chippenham and boss Edinburgh was thrilled to have tied him to a deal. “I think, along with Lee Minshull, Andy was the most important signing we made last season and he was always ideally in my plans for next year,” he said.
“The fans took to him straight away and he knows how to play a role for the team, he’s a very good bloke to have around the place.
“Hopefully, we’ll get this one wrapped up too,” he said.
“We think it’ll be a very important signing and it should all go through.”
