NEWPORT County’s new recruit Aaron O’Connor has fired the Exiles to the top of the league and is the Conference’s top scorer, but he insists he’s not even fit yet!

O’Connor has been one of the standout performers for Newport so far this term, bagging three goals in two games as County became one of only two sides to maintain a 100 per cent record in this competitive division.

O’Connor has looked a menace in tandem with strikers Louis Jefferson and Danny Crow and is promising the Exiles faithful that they haven’t seen his best yet, despite his scoring the historic first league goal at Rod-ney Parade.

“It’s nice to build on the opening day result, two wins out of two is a good start and something we can build on,” he said. “I didn’t think about the first goal being historic, but now you point it out, it’s obviously a nice feeling.

“We got a good win, put on a good show for the fans and it’s pleasing because we’ve worked hard during pre-season to give the manager what he wants from us.

“I am short of match fitness, I’m quite a way behind, I’d say I am at 70 or 75 per cent at the moment.

“I didn’t play much for Luton before I came here, 45 minutes I think, and I played one-and-a-half pre-season games for Newport.

“I probably won’t be up and running until five or six games into the season but things are going well. I’ve come off in both games so far and had a little bit of cramp but it’s coming on and I will always give it everything, even though I’m not at 100 per cent.”
