County swoop for striker

NEWPORT County signed one striker yesterday and manager Justin Edinburgh is hard at work attempting to bring in at least one more this week.
The Exiles boss saw Ryan Charles sign a one-year deal yesterday. He is also being linked with a swoop for former Swansea City hero Lee Trundle and is still in negotiations with fellow front man Danny Crow.
Trundle is without a club after the demise of Welsh Premier League outfit Neath this summer and Crow is also unattached after being released by Luton Town last month.
Edinburgh met with 26-year-old Crow on Friday and showed him round County’s new home at Rodney Parade but at the time of going to press the deal had still not been completed.
Several other clubs are believed to be interested in the striker who scored nine goals in 31 games last season and 16 in 57 appearances in total for the Hatters.
He previously scored 22 goals for Cambridge United in the Conference and netted 23 times for League Two Peterborough United between 2005 and 2008, as well as making four appearances for Norwich City in the 2004/05 Premier League season.
Crow will be familiar to County fans as the man who snatched all three points for Luton at Spytty Park last November with a 93rd minute winner.
He also scored in the Exiles’ 2-0 defeat at Kenilworth Road in January.
Edinburgh was last night unavailable to comment on Crow or internet rumours linking him with Trundle.
The 35-year-old almost signed for County in the summer of 2010 after discussions with then Exiles boss Dean Holdsworth but opted instead to join Neath for a reported £2,000 a week.
Any deal for the veteran, who has also played for Wrexham, Bristol City and Leeds United, would likely be on a pay-as-you-play basis with a coaching role also a possibility.
One signing that was finally done yesterday was the signing of Charles after the 22-year-old impressed since joining on loan from Cambridge in January.
Despite being sent off on his Exiles debut at former club Luton Town he has been a hit with Edinburgh, who he previously worked under at Rushden & Diamonds.
Charles, who scored two goals in 14 appearances last season, broke the news to supporters on Twitter yesterday, posting: “Alll Signed Sealed And Delivered #UpThePort (sic).”
He added: “I dont no anyone we are signing Lee trundle wud be ledge learning from a player like him would be amazing (sic).”
He joins goalkeeper Alan Julian, defenders Tony James and Andy Sandell, midfielders Lee Minshull and Jake Thomson and striker Jefferson Louis in signing permanent deals for County so far this summer
