Swans to face County on Parade
6:20am Thursday 5th July 2012 in Newport County & Blue Square Premier Table & Results
By Michael Pearlman
PREMIER League outfit Swansea City are the headline name for a trio of friendlies that Newport County hope will get Rodney Parade rocking.
The Exiles had already announced that League Two club Bristol Rovers will be the first visitors on Parade on Tuesday, July 24.
The Argus can reveal that after a proposed clash with Aston Villa fell through, Newport managed to entice Swansea to Rodney Parade on Tuesday, July 31, with League One club Yeovil the visitors on Friday, August 3.
This will mark County’s first season at Rodney Parade and all three clashes should be attractive to supporters.
Swansea are on a pre-season tour to America for the July 31 fixture that also clashes with the Olympics, but stand-in manager Alan Curtis has assured the Exiles some first team players will feature when the sides meet for the first time since their infamous FA Cup tie in 2006.
The Bristol Rovers match is certain to attract a bumper crowd with lots of visiting supporters expected and the match with Yeovil will give County fans the opportunity to say a fond farewell to Sam Foley, who joined the Glovers this summer after three years with Newport.
Foley was clearly excited by the news, tweeting yesterday, “So I will get to play at Rodney Parade after all!”
