MANY club golfers never achieve the much coveted hole in one, but Jackson Mountford of Newport Golf Club has done it at the tender age of nine, writes Robin Davey.

And he was in good company at the time because he was playing with 10-year-old Edward Price, the son of ex-Ryder Cup star Phil Price, who just happened to be watching.

Jackson hit the bullseye on the par three sixth hole, and club pro Paul Mayo, the former British amateur champion, admitted: "I’ve never known anyone that young do a hole in one, it was very impressive."

Jackson’s father Mark was also playing with the two boys and he said: "Jackson hit a drive off the ladies tee, the weather was drizzly and fairly grey and as it was around 7pm the light was going.

"It was a good shot, but we didn’t see the ball drop. The closer we got we assumed the ball had run off the back of the green, then Jackson ran up, said ‘it’s in’ and pulled the ball out of the bottom of the cup.

"It was high fives all round then and with Phil there it was a bit more special. I was playing but Phil was just walking around, he does that when he’s on a break.

"The two boys go to Rougement School together and have known one another for the last five years.

"Jackson joined Newport in 2009 when he was eight and has lessons with Paul every Monday in the summer. Jackson enjoys his golf, it’s about getting them out swinging a club."

It was a successful weekend for the Mountford family because dad Mark’s handicap was cut to eight as well.
