The Monmouthshire Ladies County Championships were held over three days at Newport Golf Club with the Bronze Division Qualifying round being held at Greenmeadow Golf Club.

The Qualifying rounds produced some fine golf at both courses.

At Greenmeadow Lizzie Brown of St. Mellons G.C. and Jan Breddy of Pontnewydd G.C. both recorded gross scores of 90 with Lizzie winning the Margaret Coles Trophy on countback over the last six holes.

The best Nett round was produced by Jane Probert of Dewstow G.C. with a Gross score of 102 and she won the Coronation Medal.

The Bronze Division ladies then moved to Newport for the matchplay stages and these saw Lizzie Brown beat Helen Hamilton of Greenmeadow, Linda Young of Pontnewydd and Margaret Williams of Newport to get to the final where she played Janet Beckerley of Bryn Meadows.

Janet had reached that stage by overcoming Anna John of Newport, Barbara Nelson of Woodlake Park and Stephanie Pearson of Newport with all the wins coming on the last green by one up. The final saw Janet win by 3 & 1 to take the Marcia Jones Cup.

In the Silver Division Qualifying Round Lauren Hillier of Newport Golf Club had the round of the day with her gross score of 72 earning her the Marion Buck Silver Salver.

The Monmouthshire Silver Salver for the best Nett score went to one of the County’s up and coming juniors, Megan Smith of St. Pierre G.C. whose gross 88 off her handicap of 18 gave her a Nett 70. Anna Coleman of St. Mellons G.C. was second with a Nett 75.

The matchplay stages provided some stirring golf and several upsets along the way to produce a final between Chris Harries of Llanwern G.C. and Jessica Evans of Newport G.C.

There the local knowledge of Jessica helped her overcome the greater experience of Chris to clinch the Llewellyn Trophy as County Champion by 3 & 2.

The Paton Cup for the team with the four best Nett scores in the Qualifying Rounds of the Championships was won by Dewstow Golf Club, represented by Jane Probert, Dianne Pollard, Kate Stevens and Janet Warburton.
