WHAT an ending! What a Monday! What a Ryder Cup! I can’t believe what a triumph it was after so much talk about aspects of the week that no one had any control over.

All the talk has been about the weather and that’s just so sad.

It was always going to be very difficult after so much lost play on the Friday to make the time up, but I think Monday proved to be a stunning success. Hopefully now, no one will pay any mind to the fact that it was the first time a fourth day was required.

Not in my wildest dreams did I imagine a final day crowd of over 35,000 and I think that made all the difference, it meant the atmosphere didn’t suffer and that’s important, because the crowd are what makes the Ryder Cup so very special.

Of course, we expected to see a strong fightback from the Americans in the singles, they always seem to bring their ‘A’ game for that format and this was no different, guys like Tiger Woods, Steve Stricker, Phil Mickelson and young Ricky Fowler leading the charge quite magnificently.

I was fairly confident that Europe did have enough of an advantage to get over the line but, of course, it was always likely to come down to the final few games and credit must go to Colin Montgomerie for deciding to put Graeme McDowell down in the hole at number 12.

G-Mac really was the perfect player and the perfect man to have there, his temperament is superb, his game is excellent and he seems to have an ability around the Twenty Ten course to do something majestic, as we saw throughout the Wales Open.

He fired a brilliant shot into 16 and then made a tremendous birdie putt when it really, really mattered.

As a European I feel really proud that we have regained the Ryder Cup and as a Welshman I feel a sense of real elation, because I honestly don’t think anyone could have done any more to make it a special, special Ryder Cup.

It’s truly been an unforgettable few days.
