THE sun shone on athletes at Cwmbran Stadium competing for the Les Davies Cup.

Clubs from Cwmbran, Blaenau Gwent, Rhondda, Newport, Brecon, Aberdare and Hereford took part.

There was an Olympic-style buzz in the stadium and the athletes, inspired by their heroes at the Games, gave it their all in every event on track and field.

At the half way point it was a tight affair with Cwmbran, Hereford, Newport and Brecon fighting for the top positions.

But slowly and surely Cwmbran Harriers started to edge into the lead.

It was a team performance with Leanne Fakande and Andy Williams juggling runners and field eventers in order to compete in every event.

Worthy of a mention is Tom Reynolds, of Cwmbran Harriers, who was presented with two special awards, the Bill Kingsbury Award for best performances of the season and the Bill Morgan Award for best single performance.

The best female performance went to Emily Pearce from Rhondda Athletics Club.

Cwmbran Harriers had the last say of the day though, winning the competition with 747 points, followed by Hereford 676, Brecon 675, Newport 652, Blaenau Gwent 393, Rhondda 369 and Aberdare 313.

A fantastic day was had by all attending.
