Rock-bottom Cologne’s bid for Bundesliga survival was boosted as they came from behind to pull off a surprise 2-1 win at RB Leipzig.

Leipzig looked set to move into second place in the table thanks to a fifth minute strike from Jean-Kevin Augustin, who followed up when Ademola Lookman’s effort hit the post.

But Vincent Koziello levelled with a fine strike from just outside the box in the 70th minute and substitute Leonardo Bittencourt then completed the turnaround seven minutes later.

The victory sees Cologne go level on points with 17th-placed Hamburg, with both sides seven points behind 16th-spotted Mainz.

In the tight battle for Champions League berths, Leipzig are sixth, on the same amount of points as fifth-placed Bayer Leverkusen, with Eintracht Frankfurt one point ahead of them in fourth.

Schalke are a point better off than Frankfurt in third and level on points with second-placed Borussia Dortmund – who host Augsburg on Monday night – after their 2-0 victory over Leverkusen at the BayArena, in which the hosts were reduced to 10 men in the first half.

After Guido Burgstaller gave Schalke the lead in the 11th minute, Dominik Kohr was sent off in the 38th having collected two yellow cards in quick succession.

Substitute Nabil Bentaleb then added an 89th-minute penalty awarded following Panagiotis Retsos’ tackle on Breel Embolo, an incident referee Daniel Siebert watched replays of on the pitchside monitor before confirming the decision.
