TWO-TIME winner Mountainous is amongst an illustrious list of 102 entries for the £150,000 Coral Welsh National, which takes place at Chepstow Racecourse on December 27.

The eleven-year-old, trained locally by Kerry Lee, was successful in 2013 and 2015 and will aim to make history this December by becoming the first horse to win the race for the third time.

He will potentially face stiff opposition with six of his stablemates also entered, as well as multiple entries from Colin Tizzard, Jonjo O’Neill and Champion Trainer Paul Nicholls.

In addition to last year’s winner, the second, third and fourth-placed finishers, Firebird Flyer, Shotgun Paddy and Saroque, are entered again, as is Emperor’s Choice, who won the race in 2014.

Other notable entries include Lord Windermere, the former Cheltenham Gold Cup winner, and The Last Samurai, runner-up in this year’s Grand National at Aintree.

The full entries for the 2016 Coral Welsh Grand National, along with early prices from the sponsors are included below.

David Stevens, of sponsors Coral, said: "The entries for this year's Coral Welsh Grand National are strong both numerically and in terms of quality, with the market headed by a Cheltenham Festival winner in Minella Rocco, and two classy staying chasers from the in-form Colin Tizzard team, Native River and Viconte du Noyer.

“Once again we are offering a bonus of £100,000 should the Chepstow winner go on to victory in the Coral Scottish Grand National at Ayr in April.”

Executive director of Chepstow Racecourse Phil Bell said: “This is an exceptionally high quality set of entries. The increase in prize money from £120,000 to £150,000 has clearly attracted some of the leading staying chasers in the country. It will be fantastic to see Mountainous try and make history but it will be tough if some of the big names stand their ground.

“As well as top class racing, we are looking forward to putting on a great show for the customers with international opera singers Bryn Terfel and Rebecca Evans singing the national anthem and the Bridgend Male Voice choir entertaining the crowds before racing.”
